In a news release issued Tuesday, Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Limited announced that all Ontario casinos – with the exception of Casino Rama – will reopen this month. This includes the Sault Ste. Marie location.

Starting this Saturday, Gateway Casinos Sault Ste. Marie will operate from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily with a capacity limit of 50 patrons.

'At opening and in the coming days, we will be operating with a reservation and invitation system for our customers only,' the release states. 'Due to the 50-customer capacity restrictions, properties will be open to invited My Club Rewards members only. Invited members will be notified by email with details on how to make reservations.'

A new reservation and virtual customer queue system will be in place, and customers must wait in their vehicles and check-in upon arrival at the casino.

Gaming options include slot machines only – table games will not be open at this time, and non-gaming amenities, including food and beverage service, will be extremely limited.

Dealers, slot workers and other Casino Rama union workers have voted to strike if a collective agreement can’t be reached by the end of the month. Key issues are wages, benefits and pension.

“Unifor members are pivotal to the success of Casino Rama,” Jerry Dias, Unifor National President, says in a statement. “They deserve a fair collective agreement and are prepared to escalate job action to get it.”

About 820 members voted 95 per cent in favour of a strike on January 12 if negotiations between Unifor Local 1090 and Gateway Casinos and Entertainment, the operator of Casino Rama, fail.

Unifor says the Casino’s workers are among lowest paid in Ontario and the employer’s current scheduling practices make it almost impossible to achieve a reasonable work-life balance. Local 1090 is also seeking to strengthen benefits and the pension plan.

Almost 1,500 workers at Rama – including dealers, cashiers, slot workers, food and beverage staff, environmental services, finance, hotel, valet, entertainment and other staff – voted to join Unifor in 2015 and reached their first collective agreement in 2016.
